Liebe/r Schnee- und Lawinen-Interessierte/r, liebes ÖGSL Mitglied,

die zusehends herbstlichen Temperaturen, die kürzer werdenden Tage und der erste Schnee auf den Berggipfeln lassen die Vorfreude auf den herannahenden Winter wachsen. Doch bis das letzte Blatt vom Baum gefallen ist und Frau Holle für eine geschlossene Schneedecke sorgt, bleibt noch etwas Zeit.

Der Herbst ist Hochsaison für die Wintervorbereitung. Die Bretter werden gewachst, die LVS- Geräte getestet, der Kopf wieder auf Schnee und Lawinen justiert. Weltweit finden zu dieser Jahreszeit Konferenzen, Seminare und Messen zum Thema Schnee und Lawinen statt, welche in diesem Jahr jedoch aus bekannten Gründen ins Wasser fallen oder im neuen Format erscheinen. Im Folgenden ein kurzer Überblick der anstehenden Veranstaltungen:

  • VSSW (Virtual Snow Science Workshop)

Die VSSW wurde als Ersatz für die in den Herbst 2021 verschobene ISSW (International Snow Science Workshop) in Fernie, Kanada, ins Leben gerufen. Gestaffelt auf drei Tage gibt es 14 internationale Fachvorträge welche über Livestream von jedem PC oder Tablet aus verfolgt werden können. Begleitend gibt es Diskussionen sowie die Präsentation von eingereichten Postern, wozu auch die Arbeiten der ÖGSL YSP Travel Grant 2020– Finalisten gehören:

Analog zur VSSW wird auch der Schnee- und Lawinenworkshop des Lawinenwarndienstes des US-Bundesstaates Colorado in diesem Jahr virtuell abgehalten. Via Webcast kommen auch an dieser Konferenz internationale Grosskaliber der Schnee- und Lawinenforschung sowie der Praxis zu Wort und berichten über neue Ergebnisse und Entwicklungen. Alles in allem eine etwas praktischer angehauchte Konferenz mit vielen interessanten Präsentationen auch für die nicht-Wissenschaftler unter uns. Vorträge werden aufgezeichnet und können auch nach dem Live-Stream weiter angeschaut werden.

  • NSAW Snow & Avalanche Workshop

Neben der VSSW und der CSAW bietet auch der der Lawinenwarndiest von Oregon und Washington im Nordwesten der USA einen virtuellen Schnee- und Lawinenworkshop an. Während verschiedener Termine gegen Ende Oktober können für 40 USD (ca. 35 Euro) Vorträge in englischer Sprache verfolgt und diskutiert werden. Aufgrund der für europäische Verhältnisse unwirtlichen Zeit der Vorträge (02:00 – 04:00 Uhr MEZ) soll hier nicht näher darauf eingegangen werden. Trotz der Absage der diesjährigen Alpinmesse am 14.- 15. November, findet das Alpinforum 2020 wie geplant statt! Die spannenden Vorträge und Workshops zu diversen alpinsportlichen Themenbereichen werden – wie auch in den vergangen Jahren üblich – in der Messe Innsbruck veranstaltet. Eine online-Voranmeldung ist aufgrund der COVID19-Auflagen verpflichtend. Informationen zum Programm und der Registrierung werden in wenigen Tagen auf der Homepage des Alpinforums veröffentlicht.

Aufgrund der zahlreichen Veranstaltungen, welche im Oktober stattfinden, findet am  Montag, 5. Oktober KEIN schnee.semmelnar statt. Das erste schnee.semmelnar der Wintersaison 2020/2021 findet demnach am 2. November – erneut in Form eines Webinars – statt. Nähere Informationen findet ihr zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt in Eurem Mail-Postfach.

2. ÖGSL Annual Spring Meeting (ASM) & Generalversammlung
20. November 2020

Nachdem das ASM im Frühjahr Corona-bedingt  verschoben werden musste, findet die Generalversammlung nun in virtueller Form am Freitag, 20. November statt. Das vergangene Jahr soll kurz Revue passiert und die Schwerpunkte der neuen Saison bestimmt werden. Schickt Eure Anregungen und Ideen gerne bis Ende Oktober an info@oegsl.at. Nähere Informationen zur Veranstaltung werden in wenigen Wochen in der Einladung bekannt gegeben.

AUSSERDEM

Das 4. Lawinensymposium in Graz findet am 5.- 6. November 2021 statt. Interessierte sind bis zum 30.12.2020 zur Einreichung eines Abstracts als Bewerbung für einen Vortrag eingeladen. Weitere Informationen finden sich unter folgendem Link: https://ulg-pank.at/….pdf

Abschließend möchten wir an einen ÖGSL Unterstützer der ersten Stunde erinnern. Sam Wyssen, CEO der Wyssen Avalanche Control AG, ist am 25. Juli 2020 bei einem tragischen Flugzeugabsturz zusammen mit drei weiteren Passagieren ums Leben gekommen.

Mit Sam verliert die Lawinenwelt nicht nur einen Pionier und Vordenker im Bereich des operativen Lawinenrisikomanagements, sondern auch eine außergewöhnliche Persönlichkeit. Seine Echtheit im Denken und Tun, seine Gradlinigkeit, sowie seine stets offene und freundliche Art werden uns für immer in Erinnerung bleiben.

Dear snow and avalanche enthusiast, dear ÖGSL member,

the falling temperatures, the shorter days and the first snow on the mountain tops raise the excitement for the approaching winter. But until the last leafs have fallen from the trees and “Frau Holle” provides us with a thick blanket of snow, there is still some time left.

Autumn is high season for winter preparations. The skis are waxed, the avalanche transceivers are tested, the head is once again tuned for snow and avalanches. Conferences, seminars and exhibitions on the subject of snow and avalanches take place all over the world at this time of the year, but this year, for well-known reasons, they are either canceled or appear in a new format. The following is a brief overview of the upcoming events:

  • VSSW (Virtual Snow Science Workshop)

The VSSW was initiated as a substitute for the ISSW (International Snow Science Workshop) in Fernie, Canada, which was postponed to fall 2021. There will be 14 international lectures over a period of three days which can be followed via livestream from any computer or tablet. In addition, there will be discussions and presentations of submitted posters, including the submissions of the ÖGSL YSP Travel Grant 2020 finalists:

Similar to the VSSW, the snow and avalanche workshop by the Avalanche Warning Service of the State of Colorado will be held virtually this year. This conference will also feature webcasts of international experts in snow and avalanche research and practice, reporting on new results and developments. Altogether a more practical conference with many interesting presentations even for the non-scientists among us. Presentations will be recorded and can also be viewed after the live broadcast.

  • NSAW Snow & Avalanche Workshop

In addition to the VSSW and the CSAW, the Northwest Avalanche Center (Oregon and Washington) also offers a virtual snow and avalanche workshop. On four days towards the end of October, various presentations can be followed and discussed. Participation fees are 40 USD (approx. 35 EUR).Due to the time difference, however, the lectures in Europe take place in the middle of the night (02:00 – 04:00 CET), which is why we will not discuss the event in detail here.   • Alpinforum 2020

Despite the cancellation of this year’s Alpinmesse on November 14-15, the Alpinforum 2020 will take place as planned! The exciting lectures and workshops on various alpine sports topics will be held – as in previous years – at the Messe Innsbruck. An online pre-registration is obligatory due to the COVID19 requirements. Information about the program and the registration will be published on the homepage of the Alpinforum soon.

Due to the numerous events that take place in October, there will be NO schnee.semmelnar on Monday, October 5th. The first schnee.semmelnar of the winter season 2020/2021 will take place on November 2, 2020 – again in the form of a webinar. You will find more information in your mailbox soon.

2° Annual Spring Meeting (ASM) & General Assembly
November 20, 2020

Since the ASM had to be postponed in the spring due to the situation surrounding COVID19, the General Meeting will now take place in virtual format on Friday, November 20. The aim is to briefly review the past year and determine the main emphases of the new season. Please send your suggestions and ideas until the end of October to info@oegsl.at. More information about the event will be announced in a couple of weeks.

In conclusion, we would like to remember an ÖGSL supporter of the first hour.Sam Wyssen, CEO of Wyssen Avalanche Control AG, died together with three other individuals in a tragic air crash on the 25th July 2020.

With Sam, the avalanche world has lost not only a pioneer and visionary in the field of operational avalanche risk management, but also an extraordinary personality. His authenticity in thought and action, his uprightness, as well as his always open and friendly manner will remain in our memories forever.
